Tophill Low - North and South Lagoons

North Lagoon

The lagoons act as a settlement area for filter wash water which has come from the sand filters in the water treatment works. The water that comes from the filters is rich in plankton and this is attractive to waders and wildfowl especially at times of migration.

Greenshank>> Species
Spring/Summer - During this period the lagoons are regularly visited by migrating waders, the following are the most likely to be seen:- Greenshank, Redshank, Ruff, Dunlin, Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper. There is also an outside chance of seeing Temminck`s Stint during this migration period. Many of the waders may only stop briefly and then move onto their breeding grounds. The lagoons are a favorite place for breeding wildfowl and several pairs of Shelduck raise their families here. Other breeding wildfowl include include Mallard, Shoveler, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Coot,
Moorhen and Greylag Geese. The lagoons are also a good place to see Garganey although they don`t breed on the site. The area of reedbed between the two lagoons is a good site for views of breeding Sedge and Reed Warbler
as they collect food to take to the nest.

Water RailSummer/Autumn - Again many waders can be seen at this migration period
with Green Sandpiper building up to over 30 individuals. This period is also a good time for Black-tailed Godwit, Little Stint, Spotted Redshank and Curlew Sandpiper, even Pectoral Sandpiper is a possibility. Once the breeding season
is over Teal and Shoveler start to build up in numbers, as filter feeders they
find the nutrient rich waters ideal for feeding.

Winter - During the winter is the best time to catch views of the shy and
skulking Water Rail, they can be seen around the edges of the lagoons and particularly like the inlet on south lagoon. Apart from the Water Rails there is generally very little activity of interest on the lagoons as most of the wildfowl tend to use the larger areas of water on the site.
